The best ASO tools for indie developers (2026)
First, the disclosure: we make Veldo, and it is on this list. We kept every entry honest anyway, including where the others beat us, because you will figure it out in a trial either way.
This is not "10 tools that all win". It is a map of jobs. Rank-only tracking, Apple Ads campaign control, listing operations, dual-store web suites, and enterprise intelligence are different products. Pick the job you actually have this quarter.

Who this guide is for
You are probably:
- Shipping one or a handful of iOS apps, maybe Android too
- Spending under roughly $50 to $100 a month on tooling, or one honest Mac license
- Tired of keyword caps, three tabs (rank, Ads, revenue), or a $500 suite you open twice
- Willing to hear "stay on the tool you have" when that is the right call
You are probably not:
- An agency running 40 client portfolios on Sensor Tower
- Looking for guaranteed number one rankings, which nobody honest sells
Quick picks

Side by side, through an indie lens

| Tool | Form | Stores | Keyword tracking | Your Ads spend join | Revenue per keyword | Listing ops | Indie price shape | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Veldo | Native Mac | App Store focus | Unlimited, daily organic ranks in 60+ storefronts | Yes, your own account | Optional, via RevenueCat | Light, not a full ASC suite | $8.99/mo or $99/yr | You run Apple Ads and want verdicts on device |
| Astro | Native Mac | Apple platforms | Strong rank focus, all Apple platforms | No | No | Not the centre | ~$9/mo billed yearly | Rank-only Apple, excellent native UX |
| ASO.dev | Web, plus clients | App Store + Play | Unlimited positioning | Ads intelligence on higher tiers, not your spend ledger | Not a RevenueCat join model | Strong | Seats from low tens per month | Operations and research breadth |
| ADSwift | Native Mac | Ads focused | Not a rank tracker | Campaign management | RevenueCat angle | No | ~$149 to $249 one-time | Heavy Apple Ads operators |
| Appfigures | Web | Both | Often metered on lower plans | Analytics oriented | Portfolio and finance strength | Partial | From ~$9.99/mo | Money and reviews in one dashboard |
| Sonar | Web | Both | Plan based | Not a local join | Varies | Varies | ~$19/mo or yearly | Android plus API and agents |
| Applyra | Web | Both | Unlimited on paid tier (claimed) | Check current product | Check current product | Lighter | Free tier plus ~$9.99/mo | A tiny-budget experiment |
| AppTweak, MobileAction, Sensor Tower | Web | Both | Deep | Enterprise workflows | Enterprise | Deep | ~$59 to $79/mo into contracts | Real budgets and teams |
Read the Ads column carefully. "Sees competitor ads and share of voice" is not the same as "joins your spend next toyour rank and revenue". Veldo is built for the second job. The method is written up inwhich Apple Ads keywords actually make money.
The tools, honestly
Veldo: rank, spend, and revenue in one table
$8.99/mo or $99/yr, native macOS.
Ours. Veldo is a daily organic rank tracker first: unlimited keywords across 60+ storefronts, with history, sparklines, and alerts. What it adds on top is the join. Each keyword's rank sits next to your Apple Ads spend and optional RevenueCat revenue, and the row ends in a verdict: double down, bid opportunity, cannibalizing, or money pit.
Also: reverse ASO and keyword gap, alerts, metadata helpers, custom product page notes for iOS 26, and aread-only CLI and MCP server. Data stays in a local database on your Mac. No Google Play: if you need Android, pair Veldo with a dual-store tool below.
When Veldo wins
- You already run Apple Search Ads, or are about to
- You hate reconciling rank against cost per acquisition against revenue in three tabs
- You want flat tool pricing rather than a cut of your ad spend
- Local-first and Mac-native matter to you
When to pick something else
- You want ranks on watchOS, tvOS, or the Mac App Store, which Veldo does not cover: Veldo vs Astro
- You live in listing ops, bulk localisation, and Play metadata: ASO.dev alternative
- Android rank research is your daily driver: Sonar, Applyra, or an Appfigures-class web tool
Astro: the polished native rank tracker
~$9/mo billed annually, around $108 up front, native macOS.
Fast, well designed, and ships often. Tracks rankings across Apple platforms including iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and the Mac App Store, with keyword import, reverse ASO, and its own MCP server. No spend or revenue attribution on the same ledger, and no monthly billing option when we last checked.
When Astro wins: organic-only Apple tracking, apps across several Apple platforms, and you want the nicest rank interface without needing the Ads and revenue join.
When it is not enough: you are spending on Search Ads and optimising toward subscriptions. That is a different product. Detail inVeldo vs Astro.
ASO.dev: research plus store operations
Web platform, seats from indie-friendly upward.
It shows up on best-of lists for a reason: unlimited-keywords positioning, competitor research, and a real App Store Connect and Play operations surface covering metadata, localisation, screenshots, reviews, and pricing workflows depending on plan. Higher tiers advertise adsintelligence, meaning competitor and share-of-voice views. That is not the same as joining your own campaign spend into a local verdict table.
When ASO.dev wins: listing quality and multi-surface operations are the bottleneck, you want browser and team seats, and Play matters in the same login.
When to add something else: the weekly question is which exact keywords deserve budget, on a Mac. Full write-up:ASO.dev alternative.
ADSwift: Apple Search Ads management with revenue eyes
~$149 to $249 one-time, native macOS.
Not a rank tracker. ADSwift is a campaign cockpit: bids, negative keywords, bulk edits, with RevenueCat revenue per keyword as a headline capability. Indies who spend seriously on Apple Ads often pair it with a separate rank tool.
When ADSwift wins: you live in campaign structure and bid operations every week.
When to pair: ADSwift for ads, plus Astro or Veldo for organic context. Veldo overlaps on revenue per keyword but is organised around rank, spend, and verdict rather than full campaign management.
Appfigures: analytics suite with keyword tracking attached
From ~$9.99/mo, web, both stores.
Excellent consolidated financials, reviews, and market reporting. Keyword tracking is often metered on lower tiers, historically on the order of 25 keywords on the entry plan, which makes deep ASO lists expensive quickly.
When Appfigures wins: portfolio money and reviews in one web dashboard.
When it hurts: you need hundreds of keywords without meter anxiety. More inthe Appfigures alternative.
Sonar: web based, both stores, API friendly
~$19/mo or around $149/yr, web.
iOS and Android, with API and automation-friendly packaging aimed at builders and agents. Sensible if Android is real traffic for you and a native Mac app is not a requirement.
When Sonar wins: dual-store coverage and API access come first.
When to look elsewhere: the job is a local join of your Apple Ads spend and organic rank, or listing operations breadth.
Applyra: the budget web option
Free tier plus ~$9.99/mo unlimited (claimed), web, both stores.
A younger product with aggressive indie pricing. Fine as a low-risk experiment when the budget is near zero.
When Applyra wins: you will not pay for Mac software yet and want something dual-store and cheap.
Caveat: expect less depth than the mature suites, and verify features on their site. Their own best-tools content crowns themselves, which is normal competitor marketing rather than a lab result. The same caution applies to this page, which is why the disclosure sits at the top of it.
AppTweak, MobileAction, Sensor Tower: the step-up suites
From roughly $59 to $79 a month, into enterprise contracts.
Full intelligence platforms: competitor download estimates, deep keyword databases, agency workflows. Excellent if that is your job and your budget.
When they win: funded teams, agencies, and category research at scale.
The pattern we see with indies: you pay for a lot of surface area you never open. Start cheaper and upgrade when a concrete report pays for the seat.
How to choose
- Do you need Google Play in the same tool? Yes means Sonar, Applyra, Appfigures, or ASO.dev. iOS first leaves Astro, Veldo, ADSwift, and ASO.dev all in play.
- Is Apple Search Ads on, or about to be? If yes and you care which keywords pay, that is Veldo, ADSwift, or both. If no, any of the rank trackers will do, Veldo included: it tracks organic ranks with or without an ads account connected, and the spend column simply stays empty until you connect one.
- Is the pain listing operations? Screenshots, locales, and bulk App Store Connect work point at ASO.dev. If not, do not pay for operations you will never use.
- Do you prefer Mac-native? Astro for rank, Veldo for rank with ads and revenue, ADSwift for ads. Otherwise the web suites.
- Does the keyword cap worry you? Metered plans punish learning. Prefer unlimited or honestly high caps during research. SeeASO on your Mac.
In one paragraph: only want organic ranks on Apple platforms? Astro. Managing Apple Ads campaigns hands-on? ADSwift. Need Android too? Sonar or Applyra. Want accounting consolidated? Appfigures. Listing operations at scale? ASO.dev. Want rank, spend, and revenue in one place on your own machine? Veldo.
Stacks that actually make sense
Indies rarely need one tool that does everything.
| Stack | Tools | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Ranks across all Apple platforms | Astro | Watch and TV positions, reverse ASO |
| Ads operator | ADSwift plus Astro or Veldo | Campaigns with organic context |
| Money keywords | Veldo, plus ASC for metadata | A weekly verdict ritual |
| Operations heavy | ASO.dev, optionally with Veldo | Listings plus acquisition maths |
| Dual store on a budget | Applyra or Sonar | Research across both stores |
| Creatives | A screenshot tool plus any tracker | Conversion against visibility |

What we will not claim
- That Veldo is the best tool for every indie
- Guaranteed rankings, return on ad spend, or download spikes
- That the enterprise suites are a scam. They are not, they are priced for a different buyer
- Perfect price parity on the day you read this, without a re-check
Honest tools earn waitlists. Hype burns them.
Common questions
What is the best ASO tool for indie developers in 2026?
There is no single winner. Match the tool to the job: Astro for polished Apple rank tracking, Veldo for rank plus Apple Ads spend plus revenue verdicts on a Mac, ASO.dev for listing ops and dual-store research breadth, ADSwift for campaign management, Appfigures for portfolio analytics, Sonar or Applyra for cheaper dual-store web options, and enterprise suites when budget and team size justify them.
Do I need an ASO tool if I only have one app?
Not always on day one. A spreadsheet and App Store Connect can start you. A tool pays off when you track many keywords, several storefronts, or Apple Ads, and the manual joins get sloppy.
Are free ASO tools enough?
Free tiers are fine for sampling. Serious keyword lists, history, and Ads workflows usually outgrow free caps. Use free to learn the job, then pay for the bottleneck you actually hit.
What about keyword tracking limits?
Metered keyword plans feel cheap until you start researching competitors. Unlimited or high-cap tools remove the tax of deleting keywords to stay under a plan. Appfigures-style caps are a common indie complaint.
Does Apple Search Ads replace ASO tools?
No. Ads Manager optimises campaigns. Organic rank and metadata are a parallel system. The expensive mistake is optimising cost per acquisition in one tab and rank in another with nothing joining them.
Is Veldo free?
Veldo is on a waitlist toward paid launch pricing of $8.99 a month or $99 a year when live. The keyword field counter is free in the browser with no account.
Should I use more than one tool?
Often yes. For example App Store Connect or ASO.dev for metadata, Veldo or Astro for ranks and decisions, and a screenshot tool for creatives. Two focused tools can beat one bloated suite you underuse.
Next steps
